Frome Apple Day is a celebration of the apple harvest, organised by the Sustainable Frome Apple Group. The event has been held at a number of different locations, as a way of taking the celebration to a new group of people each year.
The Sustainable Frome Apple Group’s aim is to help people in Frome make the most of locally-grown apples. It also organises pruning workshops in the winter, and looks after an apple press (owned by Somerset Community Food), which can be used by local people to press their apples to make juice or cider.
Get involved
The Apple Day event relies on having plenty of volunteers on the day, to help set up and decorate the site, get the games organised, press and sell apple juice, and make sure there are enough apples for the bobbing, peeling, and hanging on strings. Thank you to all those who came along – it all ran really smoothly this year, thanks to you!
Thank you also to the musicians, who created a lovely atmosphere at the event.
If you’d like to get involved another year, send an email to helenjohnstone@yahoo.com.
About Apple Day
The concept of Apple Day is relatively new. It was the organisation Common Ground that came up with the idea, and the first events were held in 1990. The day is officially 21 October, but there are events across the country throughout the month of October.
Common Ground has been active in campaigning for community orchards, and has helped to revive interest in apple and pear trees over the last two decades.
The Orchard Pig
The Orchard Pig has provided sponsorship for Apple Day since our first event in 2009, in the form of three crates of their fantastic juice. We sell the juice at the event, and the money raised has been crucial in helping us balance the books (we sometimes make a tiny profit, which goes into the next year’s event). We’d like to take this opportunity to thank them for helping us have some fun in Frome – and I’d urge you to buy a bottle at the event and see how good apple juice can taste.
Thank you also to our other supporters
We were also supported by several local businesses, who took stalls on the day in our marketplace, or provided food and refreshment. So thank you to the following: Fairtrade Frome, Helen’s Preserves, Eco-Logic Books, the Frome Beekeepers’ Association, Florabunda Nurseries, Deers’ Leap Chillies, Mendip Lavender, Radfords Fine Fudge and Somerset Community Food.
